Ola al mhamd Age 14 This piece reflects my childhood and the sorrow I witnessed. Many are currently further displaced. Www.alsamaproject.com @annisharrison and I held zoom calls with some of the students and Alsama art coordinator @boshra_yassine with participation from Annis’s Haverstock school students, in London. 1. Inas mustafa Age 15 ‘The fire that burns within you as you keep your sorrow inside’ 2. Baraa shahadi Age 15 This piece recounts a traumatic event where I saw a severed head between my legs in Syria, and how that experience helped build a stronger version of myself. 3. Ritaj al mohamad Age 15 This piece reflects how colours just translate my thoughts, feeling and move me from what I used to face. 4. Atyka abd mohamad Age 16 This piece tells the story of my immigration journey, as I travelled through the mountains at night and nearly sank in a river while seeking peace. 5. These beautiful paintings were made by students at Alsama Project in Shatila refugee camp in Beirut over the last term. They were shown as part of Cubitt Invites. Over the past months @annisharrisonartist and I have been having zoom calls with students from the school and @boshra_yassine, Alsama’s arts coordinator. Burçak Bingöl Fragments from Avatar - St Ives Root: B’s Rightful Kingdom, 2024 Digital print on tracing paper 42x29,7 cm (each) Jasmine Flow, 2024 Glazed ceramics 6x12x18,5 cm Burçak works from her studio in Istanbul. We met when she followed on from me in the studio 9 residency at @porthmeorstudios St Ives. She had a whopper of a show @tatestives 2022 - 23 For Cubitt Invites she brought me half her Avatar body- these exquisite prints. I guess her right arm and leg….leaving the other half in Istanbul - one foot in Asia one in Europe. (Plants from Hepworth’s garden) Burçak writes: The Avatar series looks closely to the ground, and what grows from there. It goes deep from where the artist’s body stands, and explores new ties with the knowledge of the past and present between various geographies. This work was formed with St Ives’ flora; including Japanese camellia, Spanish bluebells and Chinese goldthreads, collected by the artist herself and visually transferred to the ceramic surface. The reflection of all these St Ives’ plants settle into her own silhouette. The work also has handwritten excerpts from Barbara Hepworth’s texts. @burcakbingol @cathiepilkington @carinadiepens @sarahpickstone @cubittstudioartists #avatar #istanbul #tatestives #ceramic #bernardleachpottery

Carina Diepens The silhouette of the far away dramatic neckline Soft sculpture 2024 (and a runaway ball from @cathiepilkington) I met Carina in the 90’s 😎when we showed together in ‘Size is Everything’ a group show in the empty shops of Brixton market. At that time she was already picking an argument with the fashion industry - repurposing language from fashion magazines printed on ribbons and in Brixton these were dangled above a prostrate wardrobe perforated with holes lying on its back. It’s brilliant for me to see her new work in my studio - here the soft rubber is again studded with holes. Using the system of the language of fashion she deconstructs and reconstructs garments in a process of cutting, perforating, demateralizing and rearranging. As a result of these transformational processes, sculptures are created with genderless silhouettes with a reference to cut-up bodies and a new experience of the body. The work is about a plan to create, about possibilities and impossibilities, to materialize ideas and how the physical and mental space go together. Carina Diepens works from her studio in the Netherlands. She has shown internationally including @de_pont_museum @textielmuseum and @beaconsfield_gallery_vauxhall @carinadiepens @burcakbingol @cathiepilkington @sarahpickstone @cubittstudioartists Cubitt artists 8 Angel Mew N1 9HH Visit us on Saturday 12-6pm #cubittinvites #sarahpickstone #studiolife #softsculpture

Hey what are you up to Cathie Pilkington… Installing #studiofloor 2024 mixed media (lambs, limbs, footballs) Cathie is showing in my studio - as part of Cubitt Invites - a celebration of art friendship in our cooperative studios. Cathie installed her work on Sunday before heading off to Rome for the Bridget Riley Fellowship @britishschoolatrome So I am guarding these sweet creatures. Not the most experienced shepherd … but already I’m getting to know their different characters - their make up. When I leave the room they’re up and cavorting around - kicking balls about and being generally mischievous. I can’t keep track of everything. It’s process. That’s a thing about Cathie’s work - this tremendous life she can give an old ball or a plaster leg. She transforms material like a proper wizard. Cathie Pilkington is currently showing In Immortal Apples, Eternal Eggs @hastings.contemporary until March 2025 Cubitt 8 Angel Mews London N1 9HH Open Saturday 28th September 12-6pm @cathiepilkington @burcakbingol @cdiepens @sarahpickstone @cubittstudioartists #cubittinvites #studiofloor #disobedience #artiststudios #celebration #sarahpickstone

Over the past few months @annisharrisonartist and I have hosted video calls with children and teachers from Alsama Project, Shatila refugee camp in Lebanon and students from Haverstock School in London. This dialogue about each particular refugee journey – bearing witness to conflict and experiences far from art world life - culminates in a show of the students’ paintings from both schools, as part of Cubitt Invites this Saturday 28th September. @Alsamaproject sets up education centres, sports hubs and social enterprises in refugee camps in Lebanon. The children, at first mostly illiterate quickly gain confidence and knowledge. Last weekend Meike Ziervogel, director of the schools managed to bring the work to London from Lebanon rolled up in a suitcase. The artwork here is by Rimas al Mohammad, age 14 they write: “This piece tells the story of how I saw my Dad after he was kidnapped, unable to speak for weeks. I want to show the world how this experience made me stronger” Many thanks to all the students involved and with special thanks to Boshra Yassin arts coordinator at Alsama! Get in touch if you want to know more or come and see the work another time. Studio wall Disobedience 2024 Work in progress - which I don’t usually show but I’m interested in whats going on Palette shape recurs suggestive of head and waterlily and painting alter ego Rainbow is hard to manage in paint because it’s a ubiquitous sign, which I like all the more for this - visually common and politically universal So tall though.. Pigment and acrylic on canvas 252 x 152 cm Thanks @benjamin_deakin for the photograph #bigpainting #tootall #rainbow #palette #waterlilies

An Allegory of Painting A two part work made for the Royal Academy as part of their 250th celebration 2018-19. Shown here: The Rainbow 2018 install Belvedere 2018 in the ceiling of Burlington House hallway. The paintings pay homage to Angelica Kauffman one of two founding female members of the RA in 1768. (Mary Moser the other.) Surprised myself with how figurative the work became and attributed it to Kauffman tapping me on the shoulder saying … ‘remember your source…’ The RA’s current show: Angelica Kauffman is an exquisite exhibition, brilliantly curated by Per Rumberg and Annette Wickham. Ends June 30th I am so grateful to the RA for the opportunity to make these works - especially at such scale (omg tricky to manage in my studio) and for entrusting me with this important RA history. Huge thanks to everyone even all these years later. Calliope Arts is a terrific Arts and Humanities website/ publication dedicated to the restoration of women’s experience through research, conservation and cultural exchange. Thank you Margie MacKinnon @calliopearts_restoration for this interview about the RA’s Angelica Kauffman exhibition. We took critics of the show to task and applauded the curators of this important exhibition Per Rumberg and Annette Wickham. In my view it’s a sensitive and intelligent curation of one of the two founding female members of this significant UK institution. And thanks for including photos of my work Elements of Art - made in response to Angelica’s paintings - for the Royal Academy of Art and shown 2018-2019 photo credit: @justinetrickett @christian_levett @per.rumberg @annette_wickham3 @royalacademyarts @angelikakauffmannmuseum #angelicakauffman #angelica #rainbow #enlightenment #italy #switzerland #austria #manuelawirth Supported by Christian Levett
